Future Self Coaching
“I know what I need to do—I just keep postponing it.” If that sounds familiar, you are not lazy or lacking willpower. When today feels urgent and the future feels far away, it is easy to keep putting off the choices that could change your life. Future Self Coaching helps you make your future feel personal, real, and worth showing up for—starting now.
Your brain may be treating your future self like a stranger.
UCLA psychologist Hal Hershfield has spent over a decade studying why people so consistently fail to act in their own future interest—underfunding retirement, delaying health decisions, making choices that "future you" has to clean up. His neuroimaging research found something striking: when people think about their future selves, the brain activity in regions tied to self-recognition looks less like thinking about "me," and more like thinking about a stranger.
The encouraging part of this research: the gap is not fixed. The more vivid, specific, and emotionally real your future self becomes to you, the more your present-day choices naturally start to serve them. That's the entire premise of this coaching—closing the distance between who you are now and who you're actually becoming.
This program is for you if...
- You keep pushing important decisions—financial, health-related, career—to "future you," and future you keeps inheriting the same unmade decision.
- You're facing a major future-defining transition (a retirement horizon, a career pivot, starting a family, an empty nest) and it feels abstract or hard to actually plan for.
- You can describe what you don't want your future to look like far more easily than what you do want it to look like.
- You make choices today—spending, health habits, relationships—that you already suspect a version of you five or ten years from now would regret.
- You're ready to invest real time and resources into making your future genuinely vivid, so it can actually compete with the pull of the present moment.
Future-self work is more than imagining a different life—it is learning to make choices that bring you closer to it.
Building genuine continuity with your future self is a structured psychological process, not a one-time visualization exercise—it requires ongoing, guided work to actually shift daily decisions.

Twelve sessions. A future self you actually know.
Vividness research shows that a clearer, more specific future self produces more future-oriented decisions. Twelve weekly sessions give that vividness time to build—and time to actually reshape the choices you're making today.
Close the Stranger Gap
We use guided vividness practices—not generic visualization—to make your future self specific, textured, and emotionally real, rather than a vague, distant idea you've never really pictured.
Connect Who You Are Now to Who You're Becoming
We identify where present-you and future-you are currently in conflict, and build a felt sense of continuity between them—so decisions stop feeling like a tug-of-war between two strangers.
Translate Vividness Into Real Choices
We take the now-vivid future self and apply it directly to real, current decisions—financial, health, career, and relational—so the future self isn't just imagined, it's actively shaping this week.
Keep the Gap Closed
We build lasting anchors and check-in practices so the connection to your future self doesn't quietly fade back into abstraction once our sessions end.

Common questions
Isn't this just visualization or manifestation?
No. This work is grounded in future self-continuity research—the documented psychological gap between how we perceive our present and future selves—not the idea that picturing something makes it appear. The goal is to close that gap so your everyday decisions genuinely change, not to simply imagine a desired outcome.
What if I honestly don't know what I want my future self to look like?
That's an extremely common starting point, not an obstacle. Much of the early work is specifically about building that vividness from wherever you currently stand—even total vagueness is a valid place to begin.
How is this different from regular goal-setting?
Goal-setting focuses on the destination. This work focuses on your actual felt relationship to the person who will arrive there—which research shows is what predicts whether you'll consistently act in service of that goal, rather than defaulting back to short-term comfort.
Is this therapy?
No. Future self coaching is a collaborative, forward-focused, educational process—not psychotherapy, diagnosis, or a substitute for medical or mental health treatment. If something arises that calls for clinical support, referral to an appropriate licensed professional can be part of your larger support system.
What happens in the free discovery session?
We talk about where the disconnect between present-you and future-you shows up most in your life right now, and what's prompting you to address it. It's also a chance for both of us to confirm this program is genuinely the right fit before you invest in the full package.
Future self coaching is a collaborative, educational process.
Future self coaching is a collaborative, educational, and development-oriented process, informed by research in psychology and behavioral decision-making. It is not psychotherapy, diagnosis, or a substitute for medical or mental health treatment.
If your needs call for clinical support, I encourage you to work with a mental health professional. When appropriate and with your permission, coaching can exist alongside other forms of professional care.
Ready to meet the person you're becoming?
You don't need a clear picture of your future before you begin. Bring the vague sense of "I know I should be planning for this," the decision you keep deferring, or simply the readiness to stop treating your future self like a stranger.
A discovery session is an opportunity to talk about where you are, what you're looking for, and whether this program is the right fit for you.
