Life Story Coaching

The meaning you make of your life becomes the lens through which you see yourself, your choices, and what is possible. If your story has been shaped by loss, limitation, or what happened to you, you do not have to stay there. Together, we will uncover your strength, reclaim your agency, and author a future that feels true to who you are becoming.

The Story You Tell Is the Identity You Live

Narrative identity: you are, quite literally, the story you tell about yourself.

Northwestern University psychologist Dan McAdams, a leading researcher in narrative identity, has spent decades studying how people construct an internalized, evolving story of the self—complete with chapters, characters, turning points, and themes. His research found something with real, practical consequences: the way you narrate your past directly predicts your present mental health and your capacity to move forward.

What the research shows: McAdams identified two contrasting narrative patterns. A redemption sequence frames a difficult chapter as suffering that ultimately led somewhere meaningful; a contamination sequence frames a once-good chapter as ultimately ruined or spoiled by what came after. Across multiple studies, adults whose life stories were structured around redemption sequences showed significantly higher psychological well-being and mental health than those whose stories were structured around contamination—and redemption-sequence scores predicted well-being even more strongly than how simply "positive" or "negative" the story sounded overall. Separately, research on expressive writing (Pennebaker & Beall) found that people who write about difficult experiences in a structured, meaning-making way show measurable improvements in both emotional and physical health compared to those who don't. Life story coaching is a structured program to help you re-write your life script...
Contamination Sequence → reframed into → Redemption Sequence
Past-Defined Identity → reframed into → Self-Directed Future
Old Story → New Meaning → Intentional Future

This isn't about denying what was genuinely hard, or forcing a silver lining onto real pain. It's about recognizing that the same set of facts can be organized into a story that keeps you stuck, or a story that becomes the foundation for who you're becoming next—and that which one you're currently living inside of is, to a real degree, something you can consciously work with.

Is This You?

This program is for you if...

  • There's a chapter of your life—a relationship, a failure, a loss—that quietly colors how you see everything that came after it, as if it "ruined" or "proved something" about who you are.
  • When someone asks you to describe your life or your journey, you struggle to find a thread that makes sense of it—it feels like a list of things that happened to you rather than a story you're authoring.
  • You're moving through a major transition (midlife, a career pivot, becoming a parent, losing someone) and you feel a pull to make real sense of the first half of your life before consciously writing the next one.
  • You want to leave a clearer sense of who you are and what you've lived through—for yourself, for the people close to you, or for the next generation—and you don't know where to even begin.
  • You're ready to invest real time and resources into working with your actual life story, rather than continuing to carry it around unexamined.

  • Additional training in narrative-based reflection, values work, and yoga philosophy
The 3-Month Process

Twelve sessions. A story you're authoring, not just carrying.

Narrative identity work draws on a structured method—chapters, key scenes, characters, and themes—developed from decades of life-story research. Twelve weekly sessions give that method the time it needs to genuinely reshape how you understand your own story, not just retell it.

WEEKS 1–3 / MAP THE CHAPTERS

See Your Story as a Whole

Using a structured life-story interview method, we map your life into chapters, key scenes, and recurring characters—surfacing the themes that have been quietly running the show, often for the first time.

WEEKS 4–7 / REWRITE THE SEQUENCE

Turn Contamination Into Redemption

We identify where your current narrative follows a contamination pattern—a good thing later "ruined"—and work to honestly, non-superficially reframe it as part of a redemption sequence: real suffering that led somewhere.

WEEKS 8–10 / AUTHOR THE NEXT CHAPTER

Write Forward, Not Just Backward

With a clearer, more coherent story of your past, we turn to intentionally authoring what comes next—the themes, values, and character you want the next chapter to actually carry.

WEEKS 11–12 / INTEGRATE & LIVE IT

Make the New Story Your Default

We anchor your rewritten narrative into how you actually introduce yourself, make decisions, and relate to your past—so it becomes the story you live from, not just one you wrote down once.

Before You Book

Common questions

Isn't this just journaling I could do on my own?

Journaling is valuable, but narrative identity research specifically shows that how a story is structured— not just whether it's written down—is what predicts wellbeing. This process uses a guided method to help you see and consciously reshape patterns that are very difficult to notice in your own unaided reflection.

My past includes real trauma. Is this the right kind of support?

This work is educational and development-oriented, not trauma treatment. If a chapter of your story involves unresolved trauma, we approach it with care, and clinical support from a licensed mental health professional may be an important complement to this coaching, not a replacement for it.

How is this different from therapy?

Life story coaching is a collaborative, forward-focused, educational process—not psychotherapy, diagnosis, or a substitute for medical or mental health treatment. If something arises that calls for clinical support, referral to an appropriate licensed professional can be part of your larger support system.

What if I don't think of myself as a "storyteller"?

You don't need to be a writer for this work—everyone already has a life story running in the background, whether or not they've ever put it into words. This process simply brings that existing story into view so it can be examined and reshaped.

What happens in the free discovery session?

We talk about the chapter or pattern in your story that feels most alive right now, and what's prompting you to want to work with it. It's also a chance for both of us to confirm this program is genuinely the right fit before you invest in the full package.

A Note on What This Is—and Isn't

Life story coaching is a collaborative, educational process.

Life story coaching is a collaborative, educational, and development-oriented process, informed by research in narrative and personality psychology. It is not psychotherapy, diagnosis, or a substitute for medical or mental health treatment.

If your needs call for clinical support, I encourage you to work with an appropriately licensed mental health professional. When appropriate and with your permission, coaching can exist alongside other forms of professional care.

Your Next Chapter Starts With a Conversation

Ready to become the author of your own story?

You don't need a polished narrative before you begin. Bring the chapter that still feels unresolved, the story you've never quite known how to tell, or simply the sense that you're ready to start authoring what comes next.

A discovery session is an opportunity to talk about where you are, what you're looking for, and whether this program is the right fit for you.
